Top 10 key fashion buys for Winter

1. Lace and leather –Skinny leather trousers or a lace black dress echo D & G’s dark glamour look this winter. Alternatively a leather biker jacket worn over day and evening dresses toughen up any outfit.

2. Tailored jacket - Mannish blazer fitted styles with the sleeves worn pushed up to the elbows are hot off the press. This look works best worn with peg style trousers or a feminine sculptured dress or skirt.

3. Platform killer heels - extreme heels rule this season, rock chick styles dominate and with so many choices, it just a question of how high will you go ?

4. White Shirt a good old staple returns for day wear, in tailored cotton and for evening, cream floaty sheer chiffon and luxurious silk blouses with bows or ruffles.

5. Cocktail dress - Stand out from the crowd in a Silk or Satin jewel coloured cocktail dress. Styles favoured on the red carpet are off the shoulders asymmetric dresses and the body con.

6. LBD The little black dress, classic understated glamour, with a twist of rock chick or new goth. Worn with patterned or coloured texture tights, gives the LBD the edge.

7. Accessorise - Statement necklaces add drama to simple outfits. The box clutch or sequin soft clutch bag is an ideal accompaniment to any evening dress.

8. Animal print is back! This look is best with subtle hints of print rather than go all the way. Why not go for a pair of Leopard print ballet shoes, scarf or bag, as these little touches can liven any outfit.

9. Prom Queen Dress – think high school 1950’s vs. SJP, sex and the city. There are a range of cute or sophisticated styles out there to choose from, to be the belle of the ball.

10. Sequins are the king of bling for winter. Embellished dresses, sequin tops and trousers will make you sparkle all night long.

Roses - with Emma Horsfield

Rosa Many Happy Returns

My favourite flower, and indeed plant for the garden, is the Rose. No garden is complete without the roses’ fabulous blooms in summer. Not only does it give shape, form and colour, but also provides wonderful perfumes and conjures up the image of romance. I’m sure that most ladies all over the world have at some time received a bunch of roses that has brought a large delighted smile to their faces. In days gone by, even when I was young, it was very common to see a garden with at least one rose bed. Indeed my father started breeding roses from the early age of 13 and has built his success on growing roses for those rose beds. He is still growing roses to this day. These days fashions have changed and many gardens only house a standard rose, a climber or rambler for a pergola, or a rose whose name is for the remembrance of a special occasion or in memory of a loved one. Indeed customers tend to buy individual roses as presents. The most popular seem to be in celebration of weddings, birthdays and anniversaries such as Golden Wedding, Ruby Wedding, Silver Anniversary, Happy Birthday, Congratulations and many more. Roses for wedding presents are gaining in popularity too, named varieties such as the rambling Wedding Day which can grow up to 7 metres, the Bride, Special occasion, Honeymoon and many more.

The Royal National Rose Society whose patron was the Queen Mother was founded in 1876 (there is a rose named after the Queen Mother) but roses have been on the go much longer than that. Fossilized leaves have been found which suggest that roses were in existence some four million years ago, preceeding Man’s esistence. Roses from Asia spread into Europe over the centuries, but it was the Chinese that introduced roses from the 1790’s. These roses were the stock that made way for the many new colours and repeat flowering varieties, roses that we are used to seeing today. There are 6 countries that share the Rose as their national flower; England, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Iran, Luxembourg and Slovakia which just goes to show how well respected the flower is.

Today’s roses have generally been classified into eight categories, Hybrid Tea, Floribunda, Shrub, Miniature / Patio, Old English, Climbing, Rambling, and Carpet/Ground Cover, each having own their own unique qualities. There are colours, shapes sizes, heights, and perfumes to suit everyone. Roses are fairly easy to look after, most varieties need to be pruned once and fed twice a year. Once the growing season has started one can spray to prevent any problems, then dead-head when the flowers are done and that’s pretty much it, easy peasie! So if you don’t have a rose in your garden, I suggest that you do try one, even in a pot on the patio for starters, you’ll not be disappointed.

Feed back from the RICS Pro Yorkshire award 2008

A commemorative brochure has been produced to celebrate and showcase the greatness of building projects in the region, available from the Royal Institute of Chartered surveyors.

Here is a quote from the brochure about Pot House Hamlet who won the Commercial award

"The judges were particularly impressed by the developer's attention to detail and the way in which the refurbishment has been undertaken using sustainable materials in an innovate way. They also applauded the developer's courage in taking a speculative risk in a relatively unproven market. Overall, a very attractive development that has brought employment and investment to an area in need of rejuvenation"

Tomatoes with Emma Horsfield

Nothing beats a home grown tomato picked fresh from the vine and eaten while still slightly warm from the sunshine. I met my fiancé during the tomato growing season and every romantic dinner I used to cook for him involved tomatoes some way or another. From the bloody Mary cocktail to a basil and mozzarella beef steak tomato starter to a warm tomato tartlet or a main course of lasagne, spaghetti bolognaise or a salad tomato cous cous. It all involved tomatoes. My future mother in law used to live on a farm as a child, so every time I went to visit I took her a little bag of tomatoes too. When first courting, Charles my fiancé used to buy me lots of little presents on his visits and dates! One fond present which sits proudly on my book shelf is a tomato recipe book. So all in all tomatoes were a basis for a very happy future. So from my own experience and the love of tomatoes I urge everyone to grow tomatoes.

If you have a heated greenhouse tomatoes can be started as early as late January. If you are limited for space buy a small timesaver pack of tomatoes and you can prick your own out into little pots. Otherwise later in the season, March - May you can buy individual varieties of tomatoes. My favourites are some of the older varieties.

I find the best beefsteak is Big Boy, an F1 Hybrid, and Ideal for Outdoor Growing. I also rather like Tigerella another beefsteak which bears red and yellow stripes.
Good cherry tomatoes are Gardeners Delight which is heavy cropper with a sweet flavour and ideal for outdoors. Sun Baby is an F1 yellow cherry which is very sweet and does well indoors.

With gardens generally being smaller a bush tomato in a hanging basket or pot makes good use of space; Tumbler an F1 variety is excellent, and Gartenperle often known as garden perle is another favourite for baskets and pots as it is an early copper and gives plenty of fruit all season.

Good traditional salad tomatoes are, Ailsa Craig which is Greenback type.
Money Maker, gives a heavy and reliable crop, ideal for outdoors.
Shirley, an F1 Hybrid, heavy yielding and high disease resistance, ideally suited for medium and late crops. The best plum I have found is San Marzano, an Italian Tomato with firm flesh, ideal for canning bottling and cooking.

With all these tomatoes they are best eaten fresh straight from the vine when they have that slightly warm taste. All need regularly liquid feeding for maximum production. Why not give tomato growing a go.

Summer Styling with Rose Horsfield - Pookie

SUMMER STYLING

Key Looks and Trends with Rose Horsfield
Pookie Womenswear Pot House Hamlet Silkstone Barnsley

After the never ending rain of last summer, the look on the catwalk for this summer is optimism, with cheerful shades of yellow, floral prints, out in full bloom and the hottest look for 08, the summer dress.

The maxi dress – long and free flowing, maxi’s suit many figure shapes. For daywear, cotton maxi’s are best worn with flat sandals and in printed styles for maximum impact. Luxurious chiffons and silk fabrics with dye effects, dipped, tied or marbled add a touch of evening elegance to this look along, with high wedge shoes.

Grecian style - draped dresses, in one shouldered gowns of chiffon and toga styles in jersey add an air of ancient simplicity. Large cuff and bangle accessories finish the look along with a pair of gladiator sandals. Its high wearability factor makes the draped dress one of the season’s most flattering trends.

Bandeau dresses – found in an array of fabrics, mainly simple but effective if patterned. Short in jersey for the daytime, and either short or long for evening attire in block colours or check type tablecloth patterns. Bandeau dresses are a great way to show off your summer tan.

Shirt dresses - Taking inspiration from the safari summer neutrals palette with pocket and belt detailing. This is a flattering trend for the 40 -50 age bracket as they have all the structure on the shoulders of a jacket and nip in at the waist.

Fifties dresses – a vision of timeless elegance with belted waists and full skirts in structured fabrics, emphasising the sexy hour glass and femininity of a woman.

Which ever styles you prefer there are plenty of dresses to suit all figures and looks this summer. Finish your look with the new shape sunglasses, round frames in varying bright colours.

The Old Glassworks short listed for Award

The Old glassworks, Pot House Hamlet has been short listed for the RICS Pro Yorkshire and Humberside awards 2008. There are now only six schemes to choose a winner from. The Awards celebrate excellence in the built and natural environment. Winning schemes make it to the grand final through regional heats. This vital stage of the RICS Award process involves teams of judges visiting the best projects in their regions. There are 12 UK regional heats and an international heat, where projects are pitted against one another. The 2008 winners will join a long line of inspirational schemes including, the iconic Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, London's Royal Opera House, the Eden Project in Cornwall, and the site of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

The Old Glassworks scheme is part of developing the old farm buildings of Pot House Mill Farm into a small tourist destination. The building has been created almost solely by land owner Mr Tom Horsfield, with a few labourers and contractors to help from time to time. This is what makes the old glassworks an exceptionally unusual and quality build, with great attention to detail. The building has been designed to be in harmony with the nearby buildings on site, traditional material being used throughout. It is a landmark building with a prominent road side position.

The Old glassworks was previously a cottage which was falling down due to mining subsidence occurring in 1970’s. The renovation of the cottage started but it was unsafe so a new building had to be built in its place. Underneath the cottage the remains of the a 17th Century glassworks and 18th century pottery were excavated by English Heritage in 2003, who then deemed the site a National Ancient Monument (No 35494 authorised by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport on the 12th June 2003). The underground remains were capped off and the building of the Old Glassworks commenced shortly after this. All the stone for the building came from either the cottage or from around the farm, which is iron band honey-coloured stone, with the exception of two large stones donated by Siltstone’s Vicar from the old church alter. These have been placed either side of the main door entrance. Any exposed brick is from old farm buildings. The construction has used old materials from around the farm with the exception of breeze block, granite floor, solid oak for doors and other timber, glass for windows and any modern requirements for plumbing, heating and electricity. The construction replicates 17th century buildings as much as possible and uses lime mortar. The old glassworks is divided into three retail units, Pookie Womenswear, Jt’s Hair salon and the upstairs a shoe shop

The Old Cottage 1991

Here is a picture of the old cottage, at Pot House Hamlet in 1991. Today the old glassworks is built in its place. Underneath lies the national ancient monument for a 17th century glassworks and 18th century pottery which were excavated by English Heritage in 2003, who then deemed the site a National Ancient Monument (No 35494 authorised by the Secretary of State for Culutre, Media and Sport on the 12th June 2003). This is the first of its kind in South Yorkshire for at least 28 years, something that we can all be proud of. There were two glassworks, one a green glass and the other white.

Bye Bye to Isobelle

The trustees of Pot House Hamlet would like to wish Isobelle Thorpe and family all the best with the pending arrival of her first baby.

Isobelle was one of our first tenants at Pot House Hamlet, opening Eden Nail Studio, in the Round Tower. We would like to express our gratitude to Isobelle who has operated a very personal and professional business. Isobelle has been a joy to have at the Hamlet in every respect, from business lady, nail polisher extrodinaire, to a wonderful happy tenant. Good luck with your new venture of a family, do pop in and visit.

Meanwhile watch this space for something new in the Round Tower soon. If you are interested in renting retail space please contact Emma or Tom Horsfield info@pothousehamlet.co.uk
