Jingle Bells Poinsettia at Horsfields Nursery
Jingle Bells Poinsettia is a relatively newly introduced variety of Poinsettia with speckled leaves. Horsfields Nursery stock poinsettia in many other colours too, including the traditional red, white and pink favourites.
The symbol of Christmas outdoors is the Holly with its bright red berries. Indoor is now the Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) with its large scarlet flower-heads. Poinsettia’s like the warmth. Place in a well-lit spot away from draughts. Water with moderation, being careful not to over water.

Winter style with Rose Horsfield from Pookie
As winter approaches why not embrace the season by finding for those key glam pieces to keep you looking fabulous throughout the dark nights.
If you are board of black, the hot trend is a palette of slinky metallics and shimmering golden hues.
Nothing spells party season like sequins, so be the king of bling this winter. Embellished dresses, sequin tops and trousers will make you sparkle all night long. But keep to the rule, don’t go head to toe metallics, stick to one item per outfit.
Not just reserved for clothing, you can find metallic and sequined shoes and accessories to help finish off an outfit.
TIP FOR THE MEN: Bags are a ladies best friend, we have to take one everywhere we go and we can never have too many! No matter what you guys seem to think. Patent, clutch and metalics are key buzz words for winter bags.
Key looks for autumn /Winter 2009
· Sexy Grunge Punk - 90’s style sloppy knitwear and lumberjack shirts, leather Jackets and dresses.
· Geometric shaping – Exaggerated shoulders puffed, pleated and raised to point.
· Eighties glamour – Colourful and fun, embellished leggings, modern metallic fabrics, sequin dresses and jackets.
· Relaxed tailoring – easy elegance, dressing at its best. The chunky knit and classic look coat.
· Forties lady - Skirts to the knee, belted or seriously slim. The skirt suit making reappearance.
· Masculine /Feminine tailoring – super slim trousers and oversize boyfriend blazer

Do you know your potatoes?
So you think you know your potatoes. There are a myriad of varieties, many I have never even heard of before. Would you believe that in our nursery in late January we have a stock of 36 different seed potato varieties? Something to suit everyone. I have two favourites. International Kidney which is planted in March-April time and can be harvested from July – September. It is often known as the Jersey Royal potato, luscious when boiled and served with a little butter, and fresh mint from the garden, or cold with a salad and a little home made chutney. My other favourite is pink fir apple which is a very unusual salad potato with lots of bobbles, pink skin and cream flesh. It has quite a strong flavour, stores very well and looks great on the plate when having friends over for dinner.
Potatoes are usually classified into three groups, first early, second early and main crop. This is the time when they crop. They should be planted after the risk of hard frost has gone. Chitting is required before planting. Chitting is where the seed potatoes are placed into a tray and start to sprout. Chitting speeds up the growth. First earlies are planted March /April and can be harvested June/August. If you do not have much space the first early varieties are preferable. These can be grown in a large pot, but it needs to be at least 30 cm deep.
Second earlies are planted April/May and are harvested from July /September. Nadine falls into this group which is a very popular exhibition variety. It makes wonderful mash too, with a dash of double cream of course!
Main crops take the longest to mature; these are planted in April/May and can be lifted from August to October. They should not be left in the ground too long as they can come across lots of creepy-crawlies. Lifting is done by carefully forking up the potatoes to the surface. Maris Piper is a main crop and an excellent popular all round potato. I like this one to roast with with dripping or pig fat from a hog roast. I have a bucket of pig fat in the freezer from the last pig roast my father cooked for a friend. It is truly delicious and free!
Potatoes can be stored over winter. The best way to store is where air can circulate freely; I find plastic bags encourage disease; therefore wooden stackable trays seem to work the best.
I have been eating quite a lot of potatoes lately. Thanks to a new addition to Pot House Hamlet in the shape of a lovely blue hen hut housing a few different varieties of hens, I can therefore thoroughly recommend sautéed international kidney potatoes with a couple of free range poached eggs for breakfast!

Summer Styling with Rose Horsfield from Pookie
Once again dresses dominate the look for summer 09. Here are some of the hottest styles to keep you looking cool throughout the summer.
The bodycon - eighties style figure hugging dress, is hot to trot, so breathe in!
Tip: platforms and high heels become more creative and distinctive, so go wild when it comes to evening foot wear.
Bandeau – this no straps, nipped in waist dress is so seductively feminine.
Tip: Nude tones and vibrant block colours rule. Or add a waist belt to give more waist shaping.
Asymmetric - one shoulder dresses are proving to be a winning alternative to the bandeau.
Tip: Coral and electric blues are the hottest shades
The Maxi – in romantic ditsy floral and out of Africa tribal prints. Long and free flowing, maxi’s suit many figure shapes.
Tip: Maxi’s look better with flats, so go for a pair of embellished flat sandals or gladiators.
The cocktail dress - 1920’s flapper style fringed dresses, adorned with feathers and ruffles.
Tip: Finish this look off with a pair of Mary Jane or brogue heels.
